Rental Scams and How to Avoid Them

The business of rental properties has been growing by leaps and bounds in the cities all over the country as people are moving towards cities for the better future of their generations. Everyone must need a house to get settled once they shift in a new town.

Finding a rental property is a tiring task. One may get fed up of searching for a rental house every day. While searching for a rental house, the last thing one would want is to be the prey of a “scam”.

A rental scam means that a person will be given wrong information about the property or will be asked to pay a large amount of money as deposit, or the dealer will make excuses to show the house before getting the money.

If you face any of these issues while searching for a rental house, do not proceed further, stop right there before you become a victim of any scam and lose all you have. We have a few tips on where to stop to avoid a rental scam,

Investigate about Property Dealer

The first and foremost step while you search for a rental property is to investigate the property dealer if he is trustworthy or not. Ask different people about the credibility of the property dealer before you proceed further. If you have done right at this step, the following will have no issues.

Trust Your Vibe

Trusting your instinct is the most important factor in whatever you are doing. Your vibe never lies, learn to trust it. If your instinct is telling you something is going to be wrong, stop there. If your instinct signals positively, go ahead and work on it and if it’s about taking n to rent a property, go for it.

Do Not Pay Before Seeing the House

If you are asked to pay for the rental house or any other property without seeing the house, do not do it. Do not pay a single penny until you have not visited the house on your own. Visit the house, look for all the detailed and trivial things and then pay.

Too Little or Too Much Money

If you are being asked to pay money that is too much or too little according to the locality, take time to ponder upon the issue and then proceed. Asking for too little or too much money means that something is fishy in the matter and you do not have to pay until things are not settled.

Lame Excuses

Your property dealer will ask you to go to some address and see the exterior of the house because he cannot let you visit right now, do not fall for it. He will make lame excuses that he cannot come, he has an emergency in the house and sends him the advance money but you do not have to fall in the trap until you have visited the house.

Written Lease

Do not go for an oral lease. Always ask for a written lease to avoid any scam. The tenant has the right to ask for a copy of the lease signed by landowner. The lease should be signed in the presence of both tenant and landowner to evade any mishap.

Meet the Landlord

For a tenant to take on rent a property, it is a must to meet the landlord in person to know whose property is this and to settle all the matters. If the property dealer is making excuses on why the landowner cannot meet, this is suspicious.

Don’t be pressurized

Don’t be pressurized if the dealer is urging you to rent the house or apartment. Take your own decision, do not finalize anything in someone’s pressure else you will regret it later. Complete your investigation, do not hurry, stay calm, take time and then tell your decision. Do not let someone dictate you what to do and what not.

If you fall prey for such a scam, report the police and other concerned authorities as soon as possible. Do not wait and notify the concerned departments to get your problem solved.

Whenever you go for taking on rent a property, research and investigate properly about every little thing, do not think of something as minor as it may turn worse later and you will have nothing to do except regret. Some things are better to be investigated in time. Always go for a certified property dealer and clear system, if you find anything fishy, you know you have to stop there.
